고대인들은 세상을 동서남북으로 나누고, 각 방위를 지키는 신수를 두었다. 동쪽에는 청룡, 서쪽에는 백호, 남쪽에는 주작, 북쪽에는 현무가 자리한다. 이들은 별자리를 다스리는 성좌(星座)이자, 우주의 질서를 유지하는 제왕의 수호신이었다. 이러한 사상이 궁궐의 배치나 왕도(王都)를 정하는 원리로 이어졌다는 점은 놀랍다. 즉, 왕이 앉은 궁궐의 동쪽에는 늘 “청룡의 자리”가 있어야 나라가 태평하다고 믿었던 것이다. 

청룡은 ‘좌청룡 우백호(左靑龍 右白虎)’라는 표현에서도 확인되듯, 좌측에 위치하여 길상(吉祥)과 생기를 불어넣는 존재로 그려진다. 민화에서 푸른 비늘과 유려한 몸짓으로 표현된 청룡은 단순히 용맹한 신수가 아니라, 봄의 훈풍처럼 새로운 생명과 변화를 가져오는 존재다.

또한 동양에서 용은 ‘왕권의 상징’이자 ‘물의 신’으로 숭상되었다. 비를 내리고 바람을 일으켜 풍년을 이루는 존재, 나라를 지키고 악귀를 물리치는 호법·호국의 신으로 여겨졌다. 그래서 민화 속 청룡은 단지 장식이 아니라, 풍요와 번영, 입신양명(立身揚名)의 염원을 담은 상징적 존재로 자리한다.

청룡의 꼬리가 휘돌아 구름을 일으키고, 그 몸이 하늘로 솟구치는 그림 앞에서 사람들은 자연과 조화를 이루며 살아가려는 고대인의 지혜와 신앙심을 느낀다.

 In Korean folk painting, Minhwa (民畵), the Blue Dragon (Cheongnyong, 靑龍) is far more than a mythical creature.
He is one of the Four Guardian Deities (Sasasin, 四方神), protecting the East and symbolizing the vitality and renewal of spring.

Ancient people divided the universe into four directions, each guarded by a sacred beast:
the Blue Dragon in the East, the White Tiger in the West, the Vermilion Bird in the South, and the Black Tortoise in the North.
These divine creatures were not only celestial constellations but also rulers of cosmic order.
Remarkably, this belief influenced the planning of royal cities and palaces —
it was said that the royal palace must always face the “seat of the Blue Dragon” to ensure peace and prosperity.

The expression “Left Blue Dragon, Right White Tiger” (Jwacheongnyong Ubaekho, 左靑龍 右白虎) reflects this symbolism.
The Blue Dragon, placed on the left, embodies auspicious energy and vitality.
In Minhwa, his shimmering blue scales and elegant, fluid form represent not merely a mighty guardian,
but the gentle spring breeze that brings new life and transformation.

In East Asian tradition, the dragon is also a symbol of kingship and divine power over water.
