“I wonder whether the stars are set alight in heaven so that one day each one of us may find his own again.” (Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, ¡ºThe Little Prince¡»)

 

Photographer Kwangsoo Kim has been taking pictures of cloud, candy, stars and trees. For him, these works are a representation of his childhood memories and fantasy as well as his journey of searching for something precious from those happy days gone by.

 

In <Spring Day, Encountering_Real Fantasy>, Kim presents images of colorful candies and trees with fruits and flowers. The two subjects, the former a material object and the latter a form of life, seem disparate as though there is no obvious relationship between them at first glance. However, there is a consistent process called ‘Real Fantasy,’ in the artist’s imagination.

 

Dreaming of Kim’s process of work begins from sweet memories of his childhood. They are memories of glittering candies and jellies concealed in grandmother’s attic that seemed like a treasure chest for the little boy, and grandmother’s special love that handed him the those treasures exclusively to her grandson.

 

Searching for After a preliminary ketch in his mind, Kim sets out in search of subjects for his works: He searches in the flea market where old sundry is a sure find. He continues in the traditional market in his neighborhood, a peer’s studio, hills in front & back of his house, and even in orchards in distant provinces. Sometimes he happens upon ‘it’ by chance, and other times goes back empty-handed and exhausted. Kim searches for ‘the one’ in his imagination, night and day.

 

Being Engaged Finally after encountering ‘the one,’ the artist and subject gradually build a relationship. The chosen object is looked at from multiple perspectives. He spins it, touches it, talks to it, and even plays imaginary games with it. When he chooses a tree as his subject, Kim visits the tree every day. He waters it, picks leaves around it, places a backdrop behind it, and observes the subtle differences in the level of sunshine and wind the tree gets in different seasons.

 

Blooming for After some time, the beloved object is now a fantasy, completely reimagined in the artist’s mind. This is the moment Kim’s camera shutter is pressed.

 

Real Fantasy_ These are Kwangsoo Kim’s series of photography capturing his vivid fantasy after being engaged with all sincerity for a long time. Perhaps Kwangsoo, who says “I am sure that my works will make people happier, because I was so happy working on them,” is our Little Prince.

 

<Spring Day, Encountering_Real Fantasy>, opening this spring, 2020, will convey ‘happiness,’ a feeling that accompanied Kim throughout his search for fantasy. Let us saunter through ‘Spring Day, Encountering,’ and see for ourselves.
